Maya relaxed a little as he went for his kit, she figured if anywhere in the city was safer than this house... she wouldn't want to break in while she couldn't defend herself. She let her hand fall to her side instead of continuing to fumble with bandages. "I thought about slipping into something more comfortable for you, but... ah... I can't even get out of what I'm wearing."
She bit into the bell striker and it was clear, from looking at her, she was screaming, but nothing actually seemed to come out of her mouth. There goes her numbing spell, even with it she was in a lot of pain. But at least she has a striker that can absorb sound, "I think I'll take you up for something. Maybe the harder stuff after your sisters get home... I have no idea who decided to blow up my house."
Well, that wasn't accurate, see if they broke into her house she'd have noticed. They knew well enough to stay outside of her protections. Which was part of why she didn't die, she had enough warning to get behind a table and that was why was just in a lot of pain and not dead. So she was somewhat glad that she wouldn't have to meet all his sisters tonight. Today was enough of a disaster.
"I probably will get you out of those eventually," he murmurs, distracted. Her clothes are in shreds, and she won't be getting replacements from her own home anytime soon. She can wear some of his, and he'll wheedle one or two things her size from Sandry.
He makes tea immediately, not bothering to heat the water, just upping the dosage slightly to compensate for how cold water will weaken the mixture. "Drink. You don't seem to be bleeding to death, so I'm going to ward the house sooner rather than later. And warn Tris. Otherwise she'll scorch me later for shutting her out."
Tris could probably break his wards, given how connected they are in their magic, but she ought to know that they're up for a reason. They need to go back up once she's inside. Briar won't risk his sisters, or risk Maya again. And just thinking about explosions and flames makes him think of Gyongxe. Maya's injuries... they're the kinds of injuries he treated over and over again there. He tries to block out the tide of memory that the smell of burned flesh set off, breath falling into a meditation pattern.
Her house blown up, here in Summersea. The duke's harriers will want to talk to Maya too, but he's not going to broach that until after she's bandaged up. Maybe not till morning.
"Promises promises," Maya manages to say. This is not the time for flirting, but it was very distracting and she didn't have much better to do. She hadn't planned on what she'd wear, it was kinda low on her priorities.
Of course she sputters and curses at cold tea, but manages to choke it down anyway. Somehow in spite of the pain and burns, which really hurt, it was the cold medicinal tea that made her seem the most miserable. For the few seconds before she wince and growled into her bell striker.
"I'll make your sisters something nice... when I have a new set of tools." Maya was distracting herself now with a list of jobs and people she's crossed and who, if any, would do something like this. Or deal with people that would do this. Working for a living had the downside of the occasional deal that might lead here. But she didn't figure it'd happen in Summersea. Nobody knew her connection to Briar, but just... Briar and his sisters should have been a fairly strong deterrent. Given all they've done. "Well, I have a few people I need to deal with too. That probably comes first."
"You know I'll keep them," Briar offers Maya a smile in spite of the circumstances. He's very careful about what he promises, because he does keep every one he makes. She knows him well enough to have caught on to that much by now.
He sobers immediately at her proposed first step. "Not on your own, and before you're healed up. You came here. I do have a few uses other than my usual ones, you know. You can argue with me if you'd like, once I'm back from warding the place." He's going to vanish for a minute to do that, but don't think he won't be back, or that the vine outside his window won't find a way to warn him if she tries to leave the way she came in before he raises them.
As for making things for his sisters, Briar thinks it should be relatively low on Maya's list unless she wants the distraction.
"There's no hurry. I've had a rough day, I'm not in any hurry to do anything..." That wasn't as flirty as it was whiny. Probably in part due to the tea taking effect. The other part being that, not being alone, she could lower her guard.
Maya attempts to raise an objection, but is silenced as he runs off to defend the house. She crosses her arms... a move she regrets after she does it, but she doesn't move again because it will ruin this whole petulant child thing she has going on. Sure, it'd be nice if Briar went along, but it would have been nicer if it didn't feel so much like a babysitter. She could take care of herself, when people didn't blow up her house.
She quiets herself and hums lightly into the air, listening to the vibrations of magics around her in response to her call. A simple spell, one of her first, and not of much value but as a sort of relaxation technique. Also it'll keep her mind focused on something other than the tea. Which is awful cold. Once Briar is back, "I wasn't planning on trying anything until I could sneak past you and your sisters to get out of here."
What, if she could successfully escape four of the most well known mages in the world, she was ready to bust a few heads.
"I didn't think you would be. You can borrow some of my clothes to sleep in if you want them." Sleeping in what's left of hers doesn't seem like an especially comfortable or clean proposition.
He can feel a bit of that spell lingering in the air when he comes back. "That's harder than you think. By the time you get all of us in the house, there's enough different magics keeping an eye on things that sneaking doesn't work so well." Especially not when they're all on guard for whatever enemy she might have made.
Briar won't push her any more tonight about accepting help, but he's a light sleeper these days. Even while he's sleeping, he'll notice if she tries to leave. He puts a careful, apologetic hand on one of the few bits of her arm that isn't torn up. "Can I get you something hot to make up for the cold tea? I'm sorry about that, I just didn't want you waiting while water boiled for your painkillers."
"I... really don't want to think about getting dressed, I'll sleep naked and take you up on clothes in the morning," She was pretty sure the answer was cut off what was left of her clothes, burn them, and worry about pants when everything else was worried about.
"Which means if I manage it, I can go do this on my own?" She would be smiling if that wasn't too much effort at the moment. Briar's defenses she knew pretty well, she also knew that, without a plant mage around, her sing song could disrupt plants from being quite so attentive. She didn't know what his sisters could do, but it would make sure she was ready for anything if she was ready for them.
"...I guess I should eat something, after all of that." She wasn't sure if eating was a thing she could manage. Both the energy to eat and keeping it down. There was also the fact that she didn't want to move around much and eating lead to complicated other needs. "But maybe I can wait to see what I'm up for in the morning?"
"I might have to talk to Daja, I needed her to help me make a tin flute, it accelerates healing when played properly..." Hopefully Daja could make one without her, but the spells in the metal were more important than making sure the instrument was in the right key, it was better in certain keys, but not required. She'd need to remember the song.
